Kieran Timberlake work on the Nine Elms US Embassy in London, a $1bn glass fortress without walls which is the symbol of "transparency, openness, and equality", according to the architect company.
Kieran Timberlake was founded by American architects Stephen Kieran and James Timberlake in 1984 and has a reputation for designing sustainable architecture, such as Pound Ridge House ( 80 kilometres outside of New York City.)
The unusual form of the US Embassy's facade is designed to minimise solar gain and glare while still allowing natural light in. The reflective facade shifts in color according to the weather and the position of the sun.
The 65 metre tall glass citadel has a facade of laminated glazing enveloped on two sides with a transparent film of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). It was originally intended to act as solar shading and provide energy from photovoltaic cells in the skin, but the technology proved to complicated to integrate. So not everything is possible even for $1bn.
Following a series of high-profile attacks on US missions and growing security demands could no longer be contained within the US embassy on Grosvenor Square, a handsome building designed by Eero Saarinen in the 1950s.
To fund the Nine Elms project, US embassy on Grosvenor Square was sold to Qatari Diar, the development arm of the Qatari royal family, who have hired Sir David Chipperfield to turn it into a luxury hotel.
