Workers at the Chernobyl Power Plant finished building a the New Safe Confinement. They hope it will hold for the next 100 years.
After the fallout in 1986, workers at the plant built a sarcophagus to contain the radiation in just three months. But it was just a quick fix, designed without future decontamination in mind.
27 countries contributed for construction of Chernobyl containment shelter. It took 20 years, 1200 workers, 1,8 Billion USD to complete.
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development became the main donor of this massive 110 meter height and 36.000 tonnes, the biggest movable land base object ever built.
The containment reduces outside radiation for 90%. The shelter will serve as a warehouse to clean up radioactive waste.
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the job of containing the fallout has required an international cast of players. But with the new containment structure, full control will soon be handed back over to Ukraine.
